Busting Popular Therapy Myths

For a country that has a fairly high urban literacy rate, India still remains fairly clueless about something like therapy. This is mainly because of the stigmas that have been deeply ingrained within us when it comes to therapy and mental health related issues. There is a need to address these myths at a fundamental level to truly make a difference. Let’s look at some of the most common misconceptions that people still have when it comes to psychology therapy.

One of the biggest myths associated with therapy has to do with the thought that therapy is only for those people who are suffering from serious mental issues. Granted that mentally unwell individuals do need extensive therapy but the concept in general has evolved and expanded so much to the point where it works for everyone. Depending on the kind of lifestyle you lead and the problems you face, therapy can in fact offer solutions for all so us. The concept of a family therapist is proof that a therapist can don many hats and can reach out to a wide range of people. Another popular myth, or rather fear, that people have when it comes to therapy is that they feel it is a never-ending process. In fact, the whole point of therapy is to empower individuals to be able to heal themselves. The idea is to enable people to reach the point where they don’t need to rely on their therapist and can function efficiently by themselves.

Don’t let your beliefs and thoughts influence your perception about therapists. If you are undergoing any kind of mental or emotional issue in your life, you should see a therapist. Explain your problem with utmost sincerity and then ask the therapist what they can do for you. You might be pleasantly surprised.
